  1. After playing Catan for the past few classes I was able to learn strategies to help me gain resources in the game. A strategy I learned was to move to a port early so you don’t need to rely on other players for your resources as you can then get them from the bank. Another strategy I learned was to expand my roads by building them towards underpopulated areas so I could build the longest road. What I learned from playing Catan is that you must think about where you place your settlements as it is very important in order to gain the necessary resources.

  2. As we continued to play Catan the following classes, I was able to learn more strategies to help me win. One of the strategies I learned in order to help me was to upgrade my settlements into cities so I would gain more resources. Another strategy is to trade cards with other players. You might need a resource that another player so a lot of. What I learned from this experience was that not everyone will get all the resources they need so trading is important in the game and in the real world.

  3. The thing i enjoyed about this game, it was very interactive and it had everyone involved. There were some moments that were very intense. We all tried something new and had fun. It taught us lots of skills on the trade and how to make bargains. Some strategies that i used were; always try to land on seven so i can move the robber and stop the players from getting cards. Also to acquire a lot of bricks & oars. Everyone learned about how important it is when making a decision in the trade. You can ruin your business if you make the wrong moves. Overall this experience was lots of fun. I can’t wait to play again.

    • Having played the game for the first time, I started to realize that the game of Catan is more like a business simulator where my first settlements were like my own villages and with my trading and strategic expertise, I had to expand my villages not only through sheer luck of the dice roll but where I placed my settlements on the board trying to one-up my opponents. The strategies I used were to try and place settlements on the border of the game board to have access to ports to trade excess cards that have no use to me for cards that are vital for the expansion of my settlements. I learned that having the ability to negotiate is a skill that is much needed in the real world and playing Catan which is a trading simulation drastically changed my knowledge and understanding in the trading world and honestly made me more competitive for resources that are vital for my settlement expansion.

      • After playing my last game of Catan finishing with a win, I have finalized my philosophy on the game that “placing settlements near a resource with a number that is most likely to be rolled and then working your way up to replace that settlement with a city is vital to be more dominant mid-way through the game till the end than being dominant in the beginning and then getting overthrown along the way”. Having resources that are in high demand like lumber, brick and ore are vital to have control over with a settlement or city. For example, when I was getting 2 lumbers on my city every time I rolled an 8 which was a frequently rolled number, the resource started to come into high demand from the other players because lumber is required to build the minimum of a road and settlement. Having control over the lumber allowed me to manipulate players into giving me resources I need to expand my settlements, just like how The Great Britain was buying resources off of USA during the first World War which increased the American economy which they joined the war stronger and better than the other countries. I learned that the game of Catan mimics the real-life trades between countries. Just like how I collected resources that are in high demand because of the other players not having any access to it, countries like Canada and America which are rich in vital resources that are in high demand have a better economy because of the amount of trades they get compared to a country that doesn’t have a number of resources as first-class countries.

  4. The first time I played Catan my strategy was to place my settlements on the resources that only had the red numbers on it. I thought that it would allow me to get more resources which meant that I would be able purchase more things like cities, settlements, roads, and development cards. Towards the end of the game I realized that it didn’t necessarily workout for me. Even though I had many cards I came across the problem of having to much of one card or always getting the same two cards. Also, because I only placed my settlements on the resources with the red numbers on it that caused me not to receive things like wheat and lumber because those resources did not have red numbers on them. That strategy ultimately lead me to end in second place. Although my group was very competitive I really enjoyed this game and could see myself purchasing this game for my family.

  5. During my final game of Catan i’ve learned that just because you’ve placed your settlement on a red numbered resource doesn’t mean that you would win, trading is very important, and the placement of your settlements in the beginning of the game can make or break you win it comes to Catan. Placing a settlement on a red numbered resource just means that the dice are most likely to land on that number which means that you are most likely to receive that resource. Even though that sounds good, you could run into a problem of not being able to receive resources because you only decided to place your settlements on red numbered resources. This leads me into the second thing i’ve learned by playing Catan. Trading is a huge things when it comes to Catan and is something you should do often. Trading benefits you and your players but if you trade correctly it can make the difference of coming first or second place. The most important thing i’ve earned from Catan is that settlement placements are important in the beginning of the game. I strongly believe that players should settle on one of each resource. I think this because once you settle on one of each resource it would prevent trading (because you have every resource you need) and you would never run into the problem of not being able to purchase something because you don’t have a settlement on that resource or because none of your teammates has the resource. My final opinion on this game is that it’s very entertaining and it keeps your brain moving.

  6. After playing Catan for many classes i found that it became a lot easier. The rules of the game made a lot more seance. What i learned was that it was important to make good use of your resources not only to build them up but also to use against the other players. I enjoyed rolling a seven and being able to move the robber. It was very helpful because i was then able to cut off some people from receiving resources. Also buying resource cards were very helpful. The game was success
